Marriage is complicated.

Jesus said, “This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.”

Matthew 19:5-6

Life has a tendency to un-one us.

What can we do?

Understand that marriage is not a promise or a contract—it is a covenant.

A promise or a commitment doesn’t fundamentally change you.
            A covenant does.

Make love a verb.

You cry out, “Why doesn’t the Lord accept my worship?” I’ll tell you why! Because the Lord witnessed the vows you and your wife made when you were young. But you have been unfaithful to her.

Malachi 2:14

Fight to stay connected through the changing seasons.

Turn towards each other, not away.

            Nurture fondness and admiration.

            Create shared meaning.

Make Jesus the common goal of your marriage…
Two people imperfectly, but authentically, following Jesus.

Ephesians 5:32 tells us marriage is supposed to be a picture of our relationship with God - we are more flawed and imperfect than we know, but more loved and accepted than we can imagine. That is a relationship that fulfills and lasts.
