Sin, Consequences, & Repent // David

The Bible says that David was a man after God’s own heart. What does that mean?

“After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.‘”
Acts 13:22

David proved God true through the varied circumstances of life.

Sin, Consequences, & Repeat

We never come to a place in life where we can put our life and responsibilities on cruise control.

In the spring of the year, when kings normally go out to war, David sent Joab and the Israelite army to fight the Ammonites. They destroyed the Ammonite army and laid siege to the city of Rabbah. However, David stayed behind in Jerusalem.

II Samuel 11:1

David’s sin of neglect took him much further than he ever intended to go.
II Samuel 11: 2-27

He committed adultery and murder.

His primary sin was abuse of the office, position, and leadership God had given him.

No matter who you are, sin always comes pre-packaged with consequences.
II Samuel 11-15

But the Lord was displeased with what David had done.

II Samuel 11: 27

He lost moral authority with his family.

He lost moral authority with leaders around him.

His family started a line of disrespect, entitlement, sexual sin, and violence.

His own heart was broken.

He ended some possibilities for his life.

He responded with repentance.

Psalm 51

He accepted his consequences and continued to trust God.

The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my Savior;
    my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me,
    and my place of safety.
He is my refuge, my savior,
    the one who saves me from violence.
I called on the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
    and he saved me from my enemies.

 “The waves of death overwhelmed me;
    floods of destruction swept over me.
The grave wrapped its ropes around me;
    death laid a trap in my path.
But in my distress I cried out to the Lord;
    yes, I cried to my God for help.
He heard me from his sanctuary;
    my cry reached his ears.

II Samuel 22:2-7

He spent the rest of his life obeying.

That day Gad came to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” So David went up to do what the Lord had commanded him…But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on buying it, for I will not present burnt offerings to the Lord my God that have cost me nothing.”

II Samuel 24:24

Bottom Line: Sin will always take me farther and cost me more than I imagine. Repentance is the only cure.

Next Steps:
  1.       Evaluate any place your life may be on cruise control.
  2.      Repent from your heart for any disobedience and stop the family decline.
  3.      Commit anew to complete obedience.
