Famous Last Words | Honor, Faithfulness, and Discipleship

Jesus, the one who loves us most, used his last breath and his last words to address our deepest needs.

Jesus honored all of his relationships to the very last. He called his own mother to discipleship.

Message Notes

Standing near the cross were Jesus’ mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, “Dear woman, here is your son.”And he said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.”And from then on this disciple took her into his home.
John 19:25-27

John shows us

  • You can start again after failure—the quicker, the better.

  • Nothing is more powerful than presence.

  • Faithfulness is a long obedience in the same direction.

Jesus Shows us

  • Honor is obedience when you are young; respect and care when you are an adult.

Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise.
Ephesians 6:1-2

Then he returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. And his mother stored all these things in her heart.
Luke 2:51

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
I Timothy 5:8

  • Honor is most often a boomerang of blessing.

  • Honor is different than just love. It is a commitment to the finish.

Mary shows us

  • Character makes you a candidate to be used greatly by God.

  • If you are used greatly, you will also suffer greatly.

Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against,so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
Luke 2:34-35

There is no special pass, position, or privilege when it comes to salvation.
